CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs have acquired third baseman Ian Stewart and right-handed reliever Casey Weathers from the Colorado Rockies for outfielder Tyler Colvin and infielder D.J. LeMahieu. Stewart, who hit 25 homers in 2009 and 18 more in 2010 for the Rockies, slumped last season when he split time Colorado and Triple-A. In 48 games with the Rockies he batted .156. Weathers was 2-2 with a 5.32 ERA at Double-A Tulsa last season in 44 appearances. He missed the 2009 season after elbow ligament replacement surgery. Colvin hit 20 homers as a rookie in 2010 but struggled last season and was sent to Triple-A. LeMahieu made his major league debut with the Cubs last year and batted .250 in 37 games. The trade was announced Thursday night. (Copyright ©2011 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) Thanks for reading! . Posted in cubs-news | Comments Off

| MLB: Houston 6, Chicago Cubs 5 | |
Published: Aug. 17, 2011 at 12:00 AM
HOUSTON, Aug. 16 (UPI) — Brian Bogusevic cracked a pinch-hit grand slam in the bottom of the ninth Tuesday, rallying the Houston Astros past the Chicago Cubs 6-5. The Astros came into the ninth trailing 5-2 but began a comeback off Cubs closer Carlos Marmol (2-4) when J.B. Shuck got a one-out single. Marmol loaded the bases when Clint Barmes singled and pinch-hitter Matt Downs walked. Bogusevic then worked the count to 2-2 before blasting a pitch over the center field wall for Houston’s first walk-off grand slam since 2002. Aneury Rodriguez (1-4) was credited with the win after recording the final two outs in the top of the ninth as the Astros broke a seven-game losing streak with the wild comeback. Ryan Dempster started and went seven innings for the Cubs, yielding a pair of runs on four hits. Tyler Colvin smacked a two-run homer and Aramis Ramirez drove in two with a solo blast and an RBI single.

PITTSBURGH, Aug. 2 (UPI) — Alfonso Soriano belted a pair of homers Tuesday and the Chicago Cubs went deep six times en route to an 11-6 victory over Pittsburgh. Tyler Colvin hit a solo shot and Aramis Ramirez (four RBI) added a three-run blast in the second inning while Geovany Soto and Soriano each contributed bases-empty clouts in the next frame for an 8-2 Cubs lead. But Chicago wasn’t through as Marlon Byrd and Soriano both blasted solo homers in the fourth. Colvin, Darwin Barney and Starlin Castro each racked up three hits for the Cubs, who banged out 21 hits and handed the slumping Pirates their fifth straight loss. Randy Wells (3-4) went six innings to collect the victory, surrendering two runs on five hits and a walk while striking out seven. Pirates starter Kevin Correia (12-9) allowed four homers and eight runs overall. The right-hander was rocked for 10 hits in just two innings of work. Garrett Jones homered twice and added a sacrifice fly, driving in four runs for the Bucs.

| Fukudome era over for Chicago Cubs | |
Chicago Breaking Sports has reported that the Chicago Cubs have finalized a deal that sends outfielder Kosuke Fukudome to the Cleveland Indians for two minor-league prospects. The Cubs will pick up most of the estimated $4.5 million remaining this season on Fukudome’s contract. In return, they received Triple-A right-handed reliever Carlton Smith, who has a 4.50 earned-run average, and Class-A outfielder Abner Abreu, who is hitting .244. The Cubs will promote Tyler Colvin from Triple-A Iowa to play right field. The Indians were interested in Fukudome to help revive an offense that was no-hit Wednesday by the Angels’ Ervin Santana and is without injured regulars Grady Sizemore and Shin-Soo Choo. The Fukudome trade talks first surfaced in a Twitter report from Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal. Fukudome is hitting .273 with three homers and 13 RBIs, or one RBI for every $1 million he made in 2011, the final year of a four-year $48 million deal. The Cubs outbid several teams, including the White Sox, for Fukudome, who was hyped as a combination of Ichiro Suzuki and Hideki Matsui. Instead, Fukudome turned out to be a bust, and was eventually platooned by former manager Lou Piniella, sitting against left-handed pitchers. Manager Mike Quade inserted him into the leadoff spot this year, but still sat him against lefties. Leave any suggestions in the comment box. Posted in cubs-news | Comments Off

| Tyler Colvin recalled by the Chicago Cubs | |
Tuesday May 31, 2011 CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs have put left fielder Alfonso Soriano on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained left quadriceps.
They recalled outfielder Tyler Colvin from Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday. Soriano was hurt in the first inning Monday trying to beat out a groundball to third. He pulled up a few feet from first base, holding his left thigh. Soriano leads the team with 12 home runs and 29 RBIs. He is hitting .271. Colvin was hitting .260 with a home run and eight RBIs at Iowa. He was sent down May 16 to get more at-bats after hitting just .113 with two home runs in 62 at-bats with the Cubs.
