CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs have acquired third baseman Ian Stewart and right-handed reliever Casey Weathers from the Colorado Rockies for outfielder Tyler Colvin and infielder D.J. LeMahieu.

Stewart, who hit 25 homers in 2009 and 18 more in 2010 for the Rockies, slumped last season when he split time Colorado and Triple-A. In 48 games with the Rockies he batted .156.

Weathers was 2-2 with a 5.32 ERA at Double-A Tulsa last season in 44 appearances. He missed the 2009 season after elbow ligament replacement surgery.

Colvin hit 20 homers as a rookie in 2010 but struggled last season and was sent to Triple-A. LeMahieu made his major league debut with the Cubs last year and batted .250 in 37 games.

The trade was announced Thursday night.

Cubs Offer Arbitration to Pena, Ramirez

CHICAGO (AP) – The Chicago Cubs have offered salary arbitration to free agents Aramis Ramirez and Carlos Pena.

The players have until Nov. 30 to accept. If they decline and sign elsewhere, the Cubs would be entitled to compensatory picks in the amateur draft next June.

Ramirez’s agent has already said his client will not return to the Cubs. The third baseman batted .306 last season with 26 homers and 93 RBIs.

Pena, who played under a one-year, $10 million deal last season,
hit .225 with 28 homers and 80 RBIs while playing a stellar first base.

Cubs exercise option, but 3B Ramirez can still…

CHICAGO — The Chicago Cubs have exercised their side of a $16 million mutual contract option on third baseman Aramis Ramirez.

But Ramirez has informed the team that he will decline his side of the option and explore free agency. He has until Tuesday night to make that decision official.

The 33-year-old Ramirez had been interested in a multiyear deal. He joined the Cubs in a 2003 trade from the Pirates and just completed a five-year, $75 million contract.

He batted .306 with 26 homers and 93 RBI last season, his ninth in Chicago. He broke in with the Pirates in 1998 and is a career .284 hitter with 315 homers and has six seasons of at least 100 RBI.

The decision Sunday night on Ramirez was one of the first handled by new Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein.
