The Chicago Cubs have officially re-signed reserve outfielder Reed Johnson to a one-year deal worth $1.15 million in 2012, according to the Tribune’s Paul Sullivan. Johnson played in 111 games for the Cubs last season and provided a solid bat off the bench; he hit .309/.348/.467 with 22 doubles. Johnson has spent three of the last four seasons with Chicago, with a brief detour to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2010. He began his career with the Toronto Blue Jays, where he spent five seasons. CHICAGO, Jan. 3 (UPI) — Chicago Cubs outfielder Reed Johnson is returning to the team as a free agent with a one-year deal, Cubs officials announced Tuesday. Johnson played for the Cubs from 2008-09, spent 2010 with the Los Angeles Dodgers and returned to the North Side this past season, hitting .309 with five home runs, 22 doubles and 28 RBI over 111 games. The 36-year-old began his career with the Toronto Blue Jays (2003-07). Johnson will play his 1,000th major-league game in his third contest of the upcoming season. He has hit .283 with 59 homers, 178 doubles and 349 RBI in his career.

The Chicago Cubs have hired former star Bill Buckner as a minor league hitting coach. Buckner will be with the Boise Hawks of the short-season Class A Northwest League. Buckner currently lives in the Boise area. Buckner played for the Cubs from 1977-84 and won the 1980 NL batting title. He was a career .289 hitter over 22 seasons. Buckner, 62, was a manager last year for Brockton, a Massachusetts team in the independent CanAm league.
